Event - Altiero Spinelli anniversary11.37.00am BST (GMT +0100) Sun 7th Oct 2007 Find out about the origins of the European idea. This year is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Altiero Spinelli, one of the founding fathers of the European Union. The Federal Union invite LDEG members to an event in his honour from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm, Monday 15 October 2007 at the Italian Cultural Institute, 39 Belgrave Square, London SW1X 8NX (nearest tubes: Victoria, Hyde Park Corner) Altiero Spinelli was one of the main inspirations behind the Ventotene Manifesto and the creation of the European federalist movement, and his career included service as a member of the European Commission and then the European Parliament, where he piloted the Draft Treaty on European Union. The main building of the European Parliament in Brussels is now named after him. The meeting in London will be addressed by Richard Corbett MEP, Deputy Leader of the Labour MEPs and Socialist Group spokesperson on Constitutional Affairs, who will reflect on Altiero Spinelli's contribution to the development of the European Union and perhaps speculate a little on what he would have thought of the Reform Treaty. The meeting is being kindly hosted by the Italian Cultural Institute, 39 Belgrave Square, London SW1X 8NX (nearest tubes: Victoria, Hyde Park Corner), and will be followed by a reception. Attendance at the event is free of charge, but places are limited so please let us know you are coming. Reserve a place by sending an e-mail to info@federalunion.org.uk
