England diverging from EU water quality standards

England is set to diverge from the EU's water standards, "for monitoring water quality in England". This is because, "after Brexit," reports The Guardian, "the water framework directive was transposed into English law but the government removed the requirement to conduct annual tests." This is just the latest example of the Tory government reneging on their pledge to maintain strict environmental standards.

As the Liberal Democrats have continually report, British rivers are already drowning in sewage. And now, the government wants to use its so-called “Brexit freedoms“ to reduce protection even further. It wants to scrap the EU clean water rules to allow housing developers to dump more pollution into waterways.

Last year, 389,156 sewage spills were reported in England, Scotland and Wales. Sewage was discharged for a whopping 2.4 million hours. An investigation by the Liberal Democrats also showed that the amount of sewage being dumped was unknwon.

We must not let Brexit destroy vital protections and standards for our environment.

Sign up to our petition to call on the government to impose a “sewage tax” on the water companies and deal with the issue properly.
