Standing Up for Europe

“Noble Lords will have realised that from these [Liberal Democrat] benches there is a very clear voice on Europe.”
                  - The Baroness Smith of Newnham in the House of Lords, 21st May 2026

There is no mistaking Julie’s position on Europe, nor the passion with which she will fight for the European ideals that we all cherish. Though some may call her Baroness, while others call her Professor, the truth is that Julie is most likely to identify herself with a different title – European.

Since her days as a student at the University of Oxford, Europe has always been at the very centre of Julie’s life. From studying in Hamburg as a Hanseatic Scholar and teaching at the Central European University in Budapest, to leading the European Programme at Chatham House and standing up for Europe in the House of Lords, our continent and its shared values have been pivotal to her career, and fundamental to her own view of the world, well before her entry into UK politics.

Her more recent activities on Europe, now as The Baroness Smith of Newnham, are not the result of any committee seat or political portfolio. Instead, they are just the most recent developments in a lifetime committed to tirelessly fighting and standing up for Europe, its citizens, and the values of democracy, equality, and freedom that we all share.
