What does Julie Stand for?
Unity as Security
Together, Europe is stronger. The defence of our continent is of greater importance now that at any time in recent decades. As one of the foremost academic experts on European politics and a staunch supporter of the EU, Julie knows that unity and constructive collaboration between European nations are indispensable to the cause of continental security. She believes that now, more than ever, the ties between nations are our greatest defence against an increasingly unstable world order, and it is within organisations like ALDE that those ties are forged, strengthened, and secured for generations to come.
Expertise with enthusiasm
With over three decades of academic experience in European politics, and over two decades as a serving politician at both the local and national levels, Julie brings with her a profound understanding of and a wealth of expertise in European politics and the structures that underpin our continental democracy. As a Professor at the University of Cambridge and a sitting member of the UK’s House of Lords, Julie is directly involved with the challenges and complexities faced by liberals across Europe on a daily basis, bringing to ALDE not just a lifetime of experience, but a unique perspective which develops by the day.
Fighting for Europe
Julie’s first speech in the House of Lords was in support of the UK’s membership in the EU, setting the European tone that would go on to define much of her work in Parliament. As The Baroness Smith of Newnham, fighting for Europe has continued to be a cornerstone of her political career and her academic work beyond. In addition to being a Professor of European Politics, she is also a member of the European Affairs Committee in the UK parliament and an ardent supporter of grassroots pro-European activism in the UK, fighting for European values and the success of all European nations in every forum and on every platform.
